How To Clean Old Gold Leaf Frames

You probably accept seen those gorgeous gold bizarre mirrors with beautiful ornaments and details. Yous besides have seen a price tag on information technology every bit well. Aye, some of them can go up to thousands of dollars like this beauty here and a Primrose from Anthropologie. I decided to try my easily on DIY a mirror frame, to make it from old chocolate-brown and very average to one-of-a-kind gold Parisian mirror frame.

Ugh, that was quite an adventure! I used gilded leaf once before when I made these cute epoxy/cement trays only didn't learn much. Then allow's start from the beginning.

I had an old thrifted flooring-size mirror that I planned to use at some signal. It used to take a stand up on the back merely was all gone by the time it got to me. This brown color definitely could have a bit of updating and go a bit of golden on it.

The transformation is magical!

The whole process of using gilt leaf was new to me and I didn't know what to wait. But hither is what I've learned from working with gold leaf for the first time.

How to apply gold leaf to woods

Pace one - cull the gold leaf

Technically, anything you'll be using is a gold leaf faux and not actual gold. Imagine how expensive it would get?

I used these cheap gilt leaf sheets from Amazon and frankly, was quite disappointed. I'm not sure if it was a manufacturing fault or the way they packed it, but every unmarried sheet had a tear in the middle. That was a crucial flaw considering I needed ⅔ of the canvas to wrap around the wooden frame.

I found a mode to piece of work around it in my projection simply want to endeavor another set up in the future to run into if it works ameliorate.

I already purchased this gold leaf kit from Old Wolrd Fine art and will give you my feedback when I effort it out.

Footstep 2 - apply a thin layer of sizing to woods

Use sizing

"Size" is an one-time word for glue. You lot need to choose the sizing you'll be working with. Ideally, yous could get a special sizing for the gold leaf application. Only I didn't accept information technology and also didn't have the patience to look for one to arrive. I opted out to use mod podge and it did a great job. I take cipher to compare, of course, but it did what information technology suppose to practise - connecting the gilded leaf sheets to the wood.

I learned that a sparse layer of modern podge works better. If you put too much sizing it will take considerably longer to dry out. Also, of import to annotation that the brush for modernistic podge awarding should be synthetic and a bit fibroid.

Footstep 3 - lay down a gold leaf sheet

Try not to exhale when you take the gold foliage sheet. I plant that taking paper-thin and using it to pick upwards a gilt leaf sheet worked the all-time. Endeavor to lay it down on the wood every bit smoothly as possible. As before long as information technology touches the mod podge, it will be impossible to movement without breaking. A few breaks, in my opinion, are great - they add a fun texture, but too much doesn't wait that good.

When the golden leaf canvas is on the wood, take a dry brush and gently dab it on the sheet. Try non to make any "brushing" movements and merely tap from the tiptop, very gently.

Step 4 - allow information technology dry

Allow it dry for every bit long as you can. Gently touch it a few days later on to see how dry the gold leaf sail is and you are done! Yous can apply a protective layer on pinnacle to preserve the gold leaf sheet.

That's how I applied the gold leaf sheets to wood. Merely permit's see how we can make an antiqued gilt frame that would look stunning.

Pin IT TO MAKE LATER

How to brand a golden Parisian mirror frame

Step 1 - paint the frame

First things start, yous need to wipe all the derbies and dirt off the frame. When it's make clean, tape the mirror part off and prepare wood for painting by sanding it down.

And so you lot'd need to prime and spray paint the frame. I chose a red color for the top layer. I think when a bear on of cherry-red shows through the gilt information technology creates a special antiqued upshot. Fast forward, I wasn't disappointed.

Let it dry equally per instructions on the pigment. It's important the pigment is fully dried before the adjacent pace.

Step two - utilize gold leaf

This was my first time working with gilt leaf and oh male child, information technology took some time to go a hang of it.

The difficulty in working with gold leaf is that it's then thin and literally flies out with a little breath. Then the all-time way to handle it is with extra intendance while holding your jiff haha

I wrote in a higher place a stride-by-step how to apply gold leaf sheets on wood. When you are finished with the gold leaf application, allow it dry.

When information technology's fully dried, have a dry brush and remove all the loose gilded leaf that you accept on the frame.

Bare with me, it will go ugly before it will exist beautiful!

Step 3 - apply rub'n'buff

I was quite disappointed with the effect of a aureate leaf only. It looked too shiny and I didn't do a fine job applying information technology. I blame bad gold leafage sheets for it. Hahah

So I had to pivot and employ something else on top. I never worked with ruf'northward vitrify before, simply let me tell you, now I see what the fuzz is about. This little tube is pure magic. I used the antique gold color and applied it on tiptop of the gold leaf. Gold leafage gave me a nice texture to work with, and rub'n buff on acme added an amazing antique gold color.

Now it truly started looking like a DIY golden Parisian mirror frame. Amazing!

Step 4 - "antique" the gilded leaf

After I finished with rub'n buff something was still missing. It looked still very polished and 2 dimensional.

On the right side, I applied the paint before rub'n vitrify, left side is gold foliage just

To "antiquarian" the frame I used a mix of acrylic paints (burnt sienna and burnt bister) from Arteza paints, my go-to paints for all my projects.

Simply mix these ii colors and dilute them with a fleck of h2o. Apply this mixture to the frame and wipe it off correct away. What it does, the pigment goes into pocket-size nooks and crevices and stays there, imitating the clay that was collected over time and creating a unique old look.

Footstep five - fix the decorative applique

While antiquing the frame, practice the aforementioned steps for the decorative applique. It was a flake catchy to utilise gilded leaf sheets on it, and then I took my gloves and rubbed the gold foliage betwixt the modest detailing. That gave the molding a unique look.

Ruddy paint definitely shows through way more in the detailing, but I love the way it looks.

Repeat all the steps for the applique as yous did for the frame and mucilage it with E6000 to the frame.

Grit off all the access, accept off the tape from the mirror and y'all've got a gorgeous DIY faux of a gold Parisian mirror.
